Having Troubles Accessing Megaupload, FileServe, file-sharing website, etc?

Lately in Malaysia, SKMM (Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia Malaysia) had blocked several file sharing website like megaupload, fileserve, filetube, etc citing piracy protection issues.

Anyway, there is still a legal way to bypass the blocking. One of the most popular and simple way is to use the free public DNS. All you need to do is change the network settings DNS to

Google DNS
  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4
OpenDNS
  • 208.67.222.222
  • 208.67.220.220
There are 2 ways you can change the DNS settings. Either by changing it on your Windows or Mac (which means only that particular device will be bypassed) or change it directly at the router. By changing the DNS settings at the router, all devices connected via the router will be bypassed.

Changing DNS in Windows 7

Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> View network status and task
At the top left, click on "Change adapter settings". Select your adapter then right click, Properties.

You should then windows as the above. Double-click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

In this section, enter the Google DNS or OpenDNS numbers as above. Click OK and you're done!

Changing DNS in Mac OSX Lion

System Preference -> Network. Select your connection adapter -> Advanced -> DNS

Click on the "+" to add the Google DNS or the OpenDNS. Click OK and you're done!

Changing DNS in Router

Different router have different type of GUI interface but the settings are usually the same. Look for the DNS settings in your router setup page and update the DNS server to the ones from Google DNS or OpenDNS. The example above is from a Wireless Router by D-Link.

  1. Great info here..
I had been using proxy server to access those blocked websites; however one trouble is that need to find a free & usable proxy server every time (as most of them are only usable for very short period)
