[Tips] Keyboard Shortcut on iOS 5

One of the cool feature on the iOS 5 which was not really made known is the keyboard shortcut. One shortcut was included by default is "omw = on my way". You could actually customized it to whatever you want. To do so, go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard

You should see "Shortcuts" and the default "omw" shortcut. Here I have added "wth" which in full is .. erm.. read yourself.

Either tap on "Add New Shortcut..." or tap on "Edit" at the top right corner. You can now add your own phrase and choose your own shortcut. Just tap on "Save" and you're done.

Info from Macerkopf.de states that the next major update of the iOS 5.1 to include the further enhancements of the Siri features. It was said to feature hardware control like switch OFF/ON WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. Probably taking pictures and videos too.
This would be some interesting updates to the Siri.

iOS 5.0.1 Update - Fixes Battery Drain Problems

Apple recently released an update of iOS 5.0.1 which aims to fix the problems affecting battery life of the iPhone 4S users. As soon as the iPhone 4S was released in the US, there are getting plenty of complains regarding battery drainage with the new iOS 5. Even Apple admitted that the iOS 5 has bugs which is causing such problems.
With the new iOS 5, updates can be done easily via the iPhone itself with the Software Update (OTA) feature. This update is approximately 50MB. You do not have to download the entire 700MB+ firmware like you used to.

Update: Even with this update, some are still complaining that the battery drain problem is still there. So, anybody has any experience? Please share.

Apps Are Busy Releasing Updates for iCloud and iOS5 Support

The day has come that the iOS5 is being released. iCloud website was noted to be ready one day before the iOS official release, which was yesterday (12th October).
Other noticeable updates were iPhoto 9.2, Aperture 3.2, iMovie and iWork.

Before any of this is possible, you will have to update to iTunes 10.5 and Mac OSX 10.7.2.

iPhone 4S

In the Apple event yesterday, Apple finally releases the next generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 4S. Yes it's not iPhone 5. Much to a disappointed crowd, the new Apple CEO Tim Cook present to the world the bumped up internal specification of the next generation iPhone.

The most notable new feature would be the Siri Voice Recognition system on the new iOS5.
From what I can see, Apple is making another revamp on the already available voice recognition program. Judging from the commercials, Siri looks to be amazing. Judge it yourself from the video feed below.

The other enhancement with the new iPhone 4S is the 8MP camera of f/2.4 aperture with a video recording capability of 1080p.

Other internal upgrades include the new A5 processor which is similar to the iPad 2. It's a dual-core running at 1GHz and an internal RAM of 1GB. Besides, the radio system is now capable of supporting both GSM and CDMA all in one chip. Words are circulating that the unlock is only possible on GSM and not CDMA. The maximum download speed is bumped from 7.2Mbps to 14.4Mbps. Just for comparison purposes, Samsung Galaxy S2 is capable up to 21Mbps.

What was not noted was that the front facing camera is still with as the original iPhone 4, a 0.3MP version which is bad as the Samsung Galaxy S2 is already having a 2MP.
Also, this time around, there is a 64GB version.

So, when is it available? It will be available on 14th October on 7 major countries and on 28th October the next 22 countries (Singapore is one of them). As usual, Malaysia is not part of the early birds. The remaining countries will be available by end of the year.
In the past when iPad 2 was launched, Malaysia wasn't part of the 2nd batch which Singapore was either. But eventually iPad 2 had a parallel launch in Singapore and Malaysia. Let's cross our fingers and hope for the same this time for the iPhone 4S.

My verdict: In this new iPhone 4S, the focus is mainly on the performance of the device which includes the dual-core A5 chip (which runs almost double the speed and also 7x the graphic performance - as advertised) and the software which is the new iOS5. Nothing changes from the outlook which may be quite disappointed for most people as not everybody fancy internal spec bump.

Before we end the preview, it's always good to see Apple's ad on the iPhone 4S..

Apple Blocking Holiday/Vacation On 1st & 2nd Week of October

Hint from AppleInsider showing that Apple has been allegedly blocking employees from taking vacation on the first 2 weeks of October. This hint very closely to the much awaited iPhone 5 announcement on 4th October.
Blocking the 1st week would probably means launching of the iOS 5 and the 2nd week would be the actual launch of the next generation iPhone 5.
UK Apple Stores had reported to be doing the same as well.

"More specifically, the iPhone maker has in some locations blacked out vacation time for employees from October 9th through 12th and October 14th through 15th, according to people familiar with the matter. "

iPhone 5 Launch Event on September 8th?

Rumors are not circulating that the Apple new launching of the iPhone 5 will be held on September 8th (Malaysian time zone).
Most probable announcement should be the long awaited iPhone 5 and the iOS 5 integration of iCloud.
iPad 3 will probably not be in the agenda.

Facebook Messenger

The team in Facebook Inc. just released Facebook Messenger app for iOS and Androids.

Obviously it's free. It's a standalone app which is just for texting/chatting.
It simplifies the problem that you need to load up your Facebook app and go to message section each time you get a new message form your friends.
It's basically the whole idea of Facebook buying over Beluga sometime in February.

Another interesting part is that, it was rumored that the current Facebook Messenger app has the hidden capability of supporting video calls as well. We will have to wait and see for now..

Now, with this new app by Facebook, would it post a threat to Whatsapp?

iTunes 11 + iCloud + iOS 5

Next major announcement by Apple would probably be in 1 or 2 months' time. We should expect iTunes11 + iCloud + iOS 5 in the new launching. Sources noted that there will be a new outlook on the iTunes particularly with the iCloud integration.
